Way back in 1993, Mr. Mukesh Bhandari gave a concrete shape to his idea of making steel using Induction Furnace route so that one of our customer could produce value added steel i.e. stainless steel through the Induction Furnace route. And thus was born another stainless steel making process for all Induction Furnace users.
Metal Refining Konverter (MRK) is an improvised version of the conventional AOD and it is an effective tool for producing Stainless Steel through the Induction Furnace route.
Oxygen shrouded by an inert gas is blown through the bottom of the vessel. This reduces the partial pressure of carbon monoxide and removes carbon. Since this reaction is highly exothermic, coolants in the form of scrap or ferroalloys are added. Usually, the heat sizes during this treatment increases by a modest 20-25% depending upon the percentage of carbon present in the bath and the target chemistry.
There are three basise stages for Stainless Steel production using the MRK Vessel…
| • |
Decarburizing |
| • |
Reduction/Desulphurization and |
| • |
Final trimming |
Each and every part of the Konverter Vessel is designed with utmost perfection and precaution such that it is able to take care of the entire cycle that could vary from anywhere between 75-120minutes. And the heart of this system namely “Gas Mixing Station (GMS)” is our speciality which ensures that every cubic metre of gas flowing in the system is completely used. This GMS is micro-processor based customized software program that ensures the perfect flow rate and pressure of the gases required for achieving the desired chemistry. And the results of this process are highly reproducible and predictable as well.
Some of the features of the MRK are enlisted below…
| • |
Suitable for production of all grades of Stainless Steel. |
| • |
Process is highly predictable and reproducible. |
| • |
Gas mixing station is microprocessor based with a computer station that promotes fast decarburization and reduction. |
| • |
High recoveries of alloying elements like Cr & Mn. |
| • |
Lower gases and non-metallic inclusions. |
| • |
Accurate flow measurement compensated for pressure & temperature variation helps reduce the use of ferrosilicon & oxygen. |
| • |
UPS backup in case of power failure. |
| • |
Overall process display & recording enables modification of process parameters. |
| • |
Online print-out of recordable data of gas flow/pressure helps in monitoring, comparing & costing. |
| • |
Top lance helps reduce oxidation time. |
It is identified as one of the key metallurgical tool for economical stainless steel making process.
Principle of AOD converter operation
| • |
In MRK Operation, dilution of the oxygen by the inert gas lowers the partial pressure of carbon monoxide. This favors carbon removal and diminishes metallic oxidation. |
| • |
There are three stages for Stainless Steel production in MRK Vessel.
- Decarburization
- Reduction/Desulphurization
- Trimming |
|
Benefits
| • |
Degassing due to vigorous stirring of bath by blowing of inert gas & generation of carbon monoxide gas during decarburization. |
| • |
Low amount of residual oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen. |
| • |
High metallic yield. |
| • |
Achieving lower carbon specification without excessive metallic oxidation. |
